Main purpose of position
Assist the Genebank Manager and Species Curators with key activities related to genetic resources conservation, regeneration, characterization, evaluation, utilization, and documentation. The incumbent will support seed viability monitoring and reinforce the development of GRS innovations on seed science and technology to improve the quality of seeds maintained by ICARDA genebank. S/he will also support short term and degree trainees.

All CGIAR Centers are currently engaged into a reform process (“One CGIAR’”) that will help ICARDA and CGIAR achieve better impact through more strategically integrated research, unified governance, an integrated structure and new research modalities across participating Research Centers. This transformation is supported by CGIAR donors who have committed to increased funding as a result of these reforms.
Main Responsibilities
- Undertake field and laboratory operations of genetic resources planted in Morocco, including field layout, sowing, harvest, and process into storage.
- Undertake Seed Viability Testing and Seed Vigour Testing operations following international standards, as well as novel protocols, according to latest scientific research.
- Assist in the characterization and evaluation of the accessions maintained by ICARDA genebank.
- Collect, manage, and summarize data from GRS field trials and nurseries.
- Follow-up on all the accessions conserved at the genebank in Morocco
- Introduce data into ICARDA’s Genebank Documentation System and participation to data analysis and preparation of the reports.
- Contribute to pre-breeding activities implemented by GRS.
- Prepare seed samples to respond to external and internal seed requests.
- Contribute to capacity development and outreach activities (training NARS scientists and staff and degree trainees).
- Supervise and train Research Technicians and Field workers.
- Perform other duties related to the job as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
Education, qualifications, and experience
- MSc degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Seed Science and Technology or related discipline.
- At least 1 year experience in Seed Science and Technology in relation to seed handling in genebanks (seed conservation methods, seed processes into storage, determination of seed moisture content, seed viability testing, seed vigour monitoring, etc.).
- Knowledge on experimental designs and statistical data analysis relevant to plant genetic resources.
- Good written and oral command of English; knowledge of Arabic and/or French is desirable.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.

Terms of appointment, salary, and benefits as per NRS requirements
This is a nationally recruited position available for Moroccan nationals for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package including a competitive salary, medical insurance, 30 days of annual leave, five months’ maternity leave, 15 days’ paternity leave.
The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years, of which the first year will be a probationary period. Subsequent employment is determined based on the performance, the availability of funds and continued need for the position.
